What Is a Golden Cavalier?

Introduction to the Golden Cavalier (also known as a Mini Golden)

Golden Retriever × Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cross

A Golden Cavalier, sometimes called a Mini Golden, is a first-generation crossbreed between a Golden Retriever and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This mix combines the best of both breeds: the Retriever’s loyalty and intelligence with the Cavalier’s sweet and gentle nature.

Because some people use the term Mini Golden Retriever mix to describe this cross, you may see both names online. On this website, we use Golden Cavalier to clearly define the Cavalier × Golden Retriever cross.

Why We Love This Breed

Golden Cavaliers are affectionate, adaptable, and family-friendly. They’re equally happy joining in outdoor adventures or curling up on the sofa for quiet evenings. It’s this balance that we believe will make them one of the most sought-after companion dogs in the UK. They are a fantastic blend of two amazing, calm, loving and intuitive dogs, creating you a perfect manageable sized furry friend.

Golden Cavalier Temperament & Personality

Gentle and Affectionate Nature

Golden Cavaliers (Mini Goldens) thrive on companionship. They are naturally loving and enjoy being part of family life, making them ideal for children and first-time dog owners.

Playful Yet Calm at Home

Outdoors, they love to play and explore. Indoors, they’re calm and comforting, making them perfect cuddle buddies.

Perfect for Families, Children, and Elderly Owners

Because of their smaller size compared to a Golden Retriever, they’re also well-suited for elderly people who want the Retriever’s personality in a more manageable dog.

Therapy and Support

Golden Cavaliers are intelligent, trainable, and hugely people-centered dogs, making them increasingly popular as therapy dogs and emotional support animals.

Health & Hybrid Vigor

What Is Hybrid Vigor?

Hybrid vigor (or heterosis) is the natural health and vitality boost that comes from crossing two pure breeds. First-generation crosses often benefit from stronger immune systems, better resilience, and balanced temperaments.

The Benefits of a First-Generation Cross (F1)

Our Golden Cavaliers are F1 crosses—the very first generation from purebred parents. This helps reduce the risk of inherited health problems while preserving the wonderful qualities of both breeds. All parents are extensively health tested and all reports are available for you to view. We only breed from healthy, happy dogs!

Size, Looks, Exercise & Living Requirements

How Big Do Golden Cavaliers (Mini Goldens) Get?

Golden Cavaliers typically grow to a medium size, weighing around 9–16 kg, depending on which parent they take after more. It’s never an exact guide as each litter will vary in size. Some have been known to reach around 20kg, which is still a manageable medium-sized dog, females are usually the smallest.

What Will My Golden Cavalier Look Like?

Golden Cavaliers can take on either characteristics of the cavalier or Golden Retriever. Each litter is different and the traits, looks and temperament will vary within the mix. First generation pups tend to look more Golden Retriever but that’s no given. The joy here is that these two breeds have so much gorgeousness about them inside and out that the mix will always be adorable!

Apartment-Friendly and Adaptable

Smaller than a Golden Retriever but sturdier than a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they fit comfortably into both apartments and houses with gardens.

Exercise Needs and Daily Routine

They enjoy a daily walk and playtime but don’t require the exercise needs of a full-sized Retriever, making them easier to manage for many families.

Frequently Asked Questions About Golden Cavaliers

Are Golden Cavaliers Hypoallergenic?
No. Golden Cavaliers are not hypoallergenic and do shed moderately. Regular brushing helps keep their coats healthy and reduces loose hair.

How Long Do They Live?
With proper care, Golden Cavaliers usually live between 12–15 years.

Are They Good With Kids?
Yes. Their gentle temperament makes them excellent with children, combining playfulness with patience.

Do They Make Good Therapy Dogs?
Absolutely. Thanks to their affectionate and intuitive personalities, Golden Cavaliers (Mini Goldens) are increasingly chosen as therapy and support dogs.

Is a Golden Cavalier the Same as a Mini Golden?
Sometimes, yes. Many people call the Golden Cavalier a “Mini Golden” because it’s essentially a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, thanks to the Cavalier parent. However, the term Mini Golden can also refer to other Retriever crosses like ‘golden cocker’ etc. To avoid confusion, we use Golden Cavalier to specifically describe the Cavalier King Charles × Golden Retriever mix.
